ModelBase.co.za: Photographer : DangerousDave

My passion for photography started when I was 13. I visited my Grandfather in England, Jack
Freakley, who was a acclaimed amateur photographer who gave me a tour in his dark room. I really
enjoyed seeing what he showed me.

Apon my return, I show my interest in photography by insisting that I would take all the family
photographs. With very little knowledge and dare I say, talent my parents gave me my first camera.
It was an old Minolta compact camera. I took many photo's with it, reading several books. My
favourite being John Hedgecoe. After a year or so, my parents saw that I had the makings of a great
photographer and bought me my first SLR. It was a Nikon FE.

After showing great enthusiasm and excessive practice, I decided that I really wanted to take it
further and enrolled in a course at National College of Photography which was lecture by Martin
Onsner and Bod Ried. I have a great time and was truly encourage by them.

As I grew, so did my photographic skills and it called for me to open my own studio. I managed to
spread the word through my job at FotoFirst, where I worked over weekends. The studio had lights
and a dark room with changing facilities (My parents let me make use of the demostic quarters
behind the house) which let me get into on of my passionate genre's, fashion and commercial
photography. I regularily asked my Grandfather for advice who regreatably passed away before he
could see how well I was doing.

As time went on, my hunger for success grew greater and I knew I needed to do something to
satisfy it. I took my studies further after Grade 12 in graphic design. Seeing what I could do with
graphic design and photography in my arsenal, I studied marketing and had a two job offers at the
end of my first year. I took a position as Marketing Director of Lasrow Construction (Pty) Ltd where
I thouroghly enjoyed building the corporate identity of the firm but never had the passion in the
construction industry.

I moved on to a high performance protective clothing company as a sales manager called Pulse
Shield (Pty) Ltd. I worked very hard to give the corporate identity to be aligned with the competition
in the market. Through doing this, I became a director of HazCor, the complete facelift of Pulse
Shield. I ran the marketing and sales department, even headed up a new design fire suit
development team but still was craving more.

I then moved on, still with a sense of frustration, wanting to take my skills further and went into the
consumer market. I was given the opportunity to own a stake in Modular Comforts (Pty) Ltd. I really
had a great and exciting challenge with Modular Comforts, really pushing my skills but something
was still missing.

During these years, i leaned the art of lightning photography and got involed in active storm chasing,
this is when I was known as DangerousDave. After many years of chasing, I eventually got my
photographs published in the Pretoria News, front page.

I knew the power of nature and how awesome it is. Ithen got myself interested in reptiles and
reptile photography. Having many specimen's of my ownI started researching them and found
that many people were killing these innocent creatures out of superstician and ignorance. I decided
to volunteer at Chameleon Village Reptile & Conservation Park.

Volunteering was not new to me as I am a member of Round Table Pretoria 136 and have done
much to help the communities around us. Unforunately there are very few organisations that help
the ones which freak us out.

I then decided to give everything up and joind the team at Chameleon Village Reptile & Conservation
Park and use my skills in photography, graphic design, marketing and business management to
save those whose can't save themselves.
