"Mending race relations" is an idealist's game. SA, or any other country, will never be a carefully airbrushed Beer ad with whites and blacks (or any other race) living together in harmony. Little individual pockets may exist, but it will never be this multi-racial utopia of the copywriter's dream.

There was, and will always be, a radical value-system difference between races (broadly speaking – I'm sure there are individuals where the value systems are overlapping and congruent – but we are speaking in generalisations here). Its useless to try and mix oil and water when their values, cultures and ideals are so different.

Instead of "mending race relations" we should concentrate on allowing the other person a place to live and breathe without trampling on "their" beliefs and without allowing them to trample on "ours". You live your life, I live mine – see, easy!

My problem with the Jessicas of this world is their stupidity. Not their racism – that I can still somehow forgive if pushed. But her sheer fucking stupidity of using such a horrible word on a public forum and then pretending to be upset by the whole furore? No, that is stupidity of the highest calibre and that I find tougher to justify. Poppie: if you are a racist, that is cool with me – my own value system and belief that "morality is not absolute" prohibits me form prosecuting you. I'm against thought-policing, and if I'm integrous in my own beliefs, then I can't tell you that you should not be racist. But I can tell you not to ruin your career by making idiotic racial statements on a public forum.

Honestly, while not detracting from the seriousness of the slurs uttered by this girl, my ire is more with the fact that by her sheer stupidity, she endangered the reputation of people like Schalk and Mike Mullane who worked with her. In the same way I have no problem whatsoever with people's religious convictions, until they use it as a basis for their hipocrisy, I wish people well in their hate of others based on race.
