So, who's busy downloading it from cr-appstore? It was made available to the public today.

I LOVE Apples pricing as compared to Windoze ;)

Im registered as a developer, and tried the Beta a few weeks ago, without the faecesface integration. I wasn't overly impressed, but I'm keen to see how it runs with all the kinks ironed out.

Just BTW though:

If you ARE planning the upgrade, I suggest getting the latest version of Little Snitch (2.5.3) running ASAP. Any version earlier than this wont run on Mountain Lion. Also I believe Avast have the new free Mac version of their software available. I'm not sure it'll help in this circumstance, but better safe than sorry.

Im going to wait a little while till I read the reviews and see what it really like, but so far it looks pretty good. Im still happy with Lion though. 4GB is a huge file though. On 3g it will add R600 to the cost, hahahahaha. Hopefully I can start the download, and take my receipt to the iStore and they will copy it onto a usb again. they did that for Lion for me.

In a sentence (if possible) what are the main advantages of ML over L?

You get to see your apple shares grow as people gobble up a new apple product.

Matt as far as I can tell, there is better IOS integration, improved Safari, improved Mail, notifications, iMessage, and it runs faster.

Don't use Safari, don't use Mail, don't use iMessage on desktop/laptop..

Think I'll hang on a bit till bugs sorted then upgrade.

Apple very rarely launch anything that has bugs, which is why developers and testers, will go at it for a good few months before its even thought of to make a public release. The Mac mainstay is based on their excellent OS, not on hardware, so for them to keep the market share, they have to release programming that is of an exceptional quality... besides its 182 bucks. Seriously... I know people who spend more than that at f'n Nando's on a Friday night.

It always blows my mind that photographers will spend 30k on a lens, and still quibble about small change on the OS they process their images on.

A ticket to the photo expo is 200 bucks :D Gee's.

I cant sum it up in one sentence, but here are the improvements for laymen:

- Better iCloud support, with syncing contacts mail between devices.
- The Mac will update itself even whilst in sleep mode.
- Unlimited iMessage, sms's between devices like the iPhone. (whick BTW is free)
- Dictation, which is a bit like Dragon speech. No sitting typing if youre a lazy ass :)
- Facebook direct integration.
- Gatekeeper (nuff said)
- Rename files from the title bar.
- Encrypt a file / drive straight in finder.
- Launchpad (similar to spotlight, but better)
- The new notification center, which is very similar to IOS.
- Airprint... you dont even need a printer driver for this AFAIK
- Encrypted backups for timemachine.
- Oh yes, and apparently theyve further optimized the OS in terms of 64bit support, so PS runs even smoother and faster than before.

Then of course there's the many flashy things like being able to tweet etc etc, straight out of Notification center... which will get the over sharers blood pumping ;)

The only thing which still pisses me off is being forced to use their cr-appstore. Its an abortion of a development, that truly sucks...like nothing else Ive ever encountered, except for maybe Eskom.

Mark, you don't need to DL at all actually.
You basically do the zapp-store purchase, and start, then cancel the download. You would then just pick up a disc at Digicape or iStore.

It's kinda weird the way Apple OS upgrades work. The silly people introduce new versions of their operating system when theres buggerall wrong with their present version. A total mindf*^% for the Windoze users amongst us.

Unfortunately you cant actually purchase ML on disk like you used to be able to do before.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4138491?tstart=0

The option to create your own boot disk, is in the the image you DL from the store.

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/07/how-to-create-a-bootable-backup-mountain-lion-in stall-disk/

Brad is correct though. All you really need is the purchase ticket and iStore (if you can find a salesman that uses vowels when he speaks) should be able to give you an already created "drop in" disk.

If you have a brand new Mac, you may qualify for a free uprade to ML if it isnt already installed. Contact Apple.

I was at the iStore this evening and they will be getting disks next week. I just need to show them my iTunes receipt.

My biggest concern with the download, is if the connection gets interrupted, the download starts again from scratch. No Idia why Apple do that, any other download can resume. Its happened to me before, last time when i was downloading Xcode.

I suppose R180 bucks is less than a night at the pub.

This is because theyre forcing everyone (including the developers) to use their crap store to download everything, which is why I flippen HATE using it.
It manages the small app downloads, but konks out with the larger one's like this. I honestly dont think their servers have the clout to handle the entire world trying to each download a file this size.

The security scripts running on the server wont allow the download to continue, because it wants you to authenticate again, every time you re-start, in case you know... you download the same 4 gig file 100 times *eye roll* Because that would be the attempt of the dumbest software pirate EVER. ;( In which case he probably wouldnt be using MacOS anyways *giggle snort*

I think because Apple done use authentication and xxxx keys like windoze, they want to make sure you buy it from the app store. Gate Keeper is also going to cause problems for some people, but it is a good system. people with pirated software could be in for a shock.

I think if you live in a first world county, with fast reliable broadband, it is not a problem, esp with everything syncing to iCloud as well. But here, where most of us done have uncapped internet, it can be a pain in the ass.

Thomas, Bugs was probably the wrong word... no doubt the actual ML platform will work... My concern is that my 3rd party programs like Quickbooks (which has only now released the upgrades for Lion) will work..

And I agree the Mac upgrades cost very little.
