just leave the mua to do whatever they want
I work with theresa (#8883) quite often, and I have more than once said "go ape, so what thou wilt". I give her bsolute free reign over the make-up, and the results have never let me down.
I trust Theresa has more knowledge/experience in her field than I do, I know she knows how to take a concept and run with it. I've benver been let down by letting the MUA just go on a creative fugue.
she does nto tell me how to light, I do not tell her how to make-up. together we make magic.
Of course, we always discuss beforehand - all 3 of us - what the theme is to be. but within that theme she is allowed her own space to work in.
None of this was ever so evident when I said I wanted an "old fashioned film noir look" - and she replied: "30's, 40's or 50's film noir?" Feck, I dunno - make em look like something out of an old-fashioned movie! And then she delivered exactly what I had in mind, and then explained to me subtle differences between the loks of the eras - stuff that I'd NEVER be able to direct anyone to do. Bottom line: a good make-up artist is worth her weight in gold, and if you give them the freedom to fly, they will make your work soar!
