I get the feeling sometimes that techies make things more confusing on purpose just so they can have a 1-up on the general population...

It seems I'm going to have to study networking soon.
I have all these cool network capable gadgets, a network raid system, network printers, etc...
But damned if I can set any of them up!

To top it all I'm trying to set up my D4 to wireless network with my Macbook, iPad and iPhone so I can preview/download my images (and even control my camera) externally.

I've managed to hook it up to the iPad with what's called an Ad Hoc connection where the iPad connects directly to the cam using the WT-5 transmitter and I must say it works really well. What a pleasure using live-view and zooming in on your focus point at 200%, selecting focus point, adjusting settings etc - you could do an entire shoot without touching your camera (if you wanted to..).

But to connect Ad Hoc means you connect directly via Wi-Fi and discard your external connections (i.e. internet).

I'm going to have to try set up what's called an Infrastructure connection now via my router.... so now it starts getting technical again...

Any tech junkies out there dying to take on a networking challenge?

Try setup an IP range on your router, and set all your devices to static IP's within that range.

It sounds like your WT-5 isnt set up to get an IP address from the IP pool (range) your router is dishing out. Do you see anything in the WT-5 settings about setting it up as a "DHCP client"?

Sorry got caught up with admin and had to discard the techie stuff for a bit. Will try again when at the studio in morning..
It seems to have loads of settings, you need to understand I don't even know how to access my router, never mind know what ranges its broadcasting..

I'll hit the manuals and see what I can figure out, seems pretty versatile though.
My ad hoc connections work on my iPad and iPhone without any hitches, and the camera has the option to store numerous connections so I'll keep that one set upas a backup and for location shooting outside of a wifi network..

It's such a pleasure being cable free...
One note though, having the connection running permanently does reduce battery life quite drastically. My battery used to last me for days on a single charge, I'd expect about 5 hrs from now on constant use at best (if constant wifi).

Some of us don't have the luxury of a D4, hehehehe, Get a Eye_fi card, it makes it so much easier. I can shoot tethered to my iPad, iPhone and mac no problem. Even store images on the cloud if I need to for remote viewing. I love the digital age, no more wires.

The Eye-Fi cards are great but in the big bodies I believe the signal sucks (metal casings etc), especially if they also have to be converted to CF with another adapter.

Big plus to be wire free though!

Yes, there are 9 network connection slots for adhoc connection to single devices on location, as well as to existing networks like Office, Home etc.

I have a SD Card slot in my 1Ds so it works well. Never knew what to use it for before anyway. No hassles as yet with signal,

MMM strange, my eye fi card work perfectly, I actually bought the Lexar version which is made by eye-fi but branded as Lexar. I have not had too many hassles except sometimes I lose connection to my iPad and have to switch the camera off and on again.

Ive used it in my 1Ds and tried it in a 7d and 5d Mk11 with an adaptor card.

Good swap Matt Raven, Id make it at least 6 beers and a whiskey.
