Fortunately my D800 was in my hands at the time and my 200 F2 bag was actually hooked around my leg..

So what's the latest on this case...after 6 pages and the obviously many hours and thoughts consumed in their making, it would be a waste to see it become cold.

Well, there have been some developments over the last few days, with policemen at the accused's local police station (where the confiscated items and case docket has been transferred to -in terms of court jurisdiction) apparently "misunderstanding" what has transpired thus far, and taking certain actions which have now been brought to attention of SAPS management.
Better though that this remains under wraps for now, as interesting as new revelations may be to the photographic community.

Does anyone have a contact number for the Detective on this case perhaps? A fellow photographer's house was broken into and her camera gear stolen so I'd like to pass her this info in case her stuff is sitting there unclaimed (she has her serial numbers)

Just a quick tip: If you are looking out for second hand camera gear, phone your local agent and give them the serial number.
They can tell you a lot about the gear that you are about too buy. Like is it still serviceable. In other words do they still make parts for it. Was it in for any repairs. Is it grey or sometimes even if it was stolen. It takes one call. If the dealer becomes all sweaty and hostile while you are making your call you know that it's time too walk away.
