... and just when this discussion was becoming interesting.

Ja, can't we have a decent Nikon vs Canon debate without rude interruptions.

The world needs our wisdom on this subject.

Christo, its page 6. Some (like say, me..) may argue that a total page 6 joined us a few pages ago, but nevertheless, have you found your Concourt case 25 of 99 yet?

Regarding second hand goods - anyone else notice how often second-hand Canon gear comes up for sale here on MB?

Its not a bait, Matt, its true. There is a shipload of Canon gear for sale on here. In light of the current thread, I'm just wondering what gives.

do a search for "for sale" on the classifieds, and on the 1st page, every "for sale" item - 5 of them - are for pieces of Canon gear. I did not bother to go to page 2.

Hmmmm... my ad is still on the 1'st page of the classifieds here, although I locked it, due to a change of heart.

I haven't followed this thread since the beginning, but just skimming it, gives me enough reason to not want to participate in it. I get the angst behind it, and can sympathize... but its a train wreck as it now stands unfortunately.

Gerry I see what youre saying, but it kinda sounds like its implying something else? This site really has very little to do with any other site... it may have a few common members, but I think thats where it ends. General accusations, and especially serious one's, as Ive seen both here, and elsewhere, can lead to real life issues later, for both the person making the accusation or insinuation, as well as the person on the receiving end. There is just so much bs in this industry as it is, Im not convinced adding to it, is wise decision.

I do have the insurance papers from the replacement as well as the invoice from the dealer, if anyone is interested, however I have changed my mind about selling it, so it would be a bit of a waste ;)

Thomas - I was not implying anything - I think what it could be was a knee-jerk reaction this this whole saga. Lots if 2nd-hand goods are sold stolen, and then every week someone comes up with gear for sale? Two and two make seventy-four! It was an observation, not an accusation, and if it came across as that, I apologise.

I have changed my mind about selling it

Best news I've heard all day, considering I've only been awake 35 minutes.

I'm off the net for a week and all hell breaks loose..

Brad, thanks for starting the post as it's an interesting subject and I'd certainly like to hear the result of the investigation.

But at the moment it is still just an investigation...

Getting into personal attacks with everyone won't get anyone anywhere, nor will it help the police case at all.

If 'Hannes' is as guilty as he seems I hope he gets everything he deserves, along with everyone else involved.

Before I go further maybe I should mention that I was in CT last week for a shoot in the CBD and had a camera bag with a D3 and a bunch of pro lenses, memory cards, etc. stolen from me within 4 hrs (this after shooting a week in JHB CBD with no incidents).
Fortunately in my case it was not a violent crime but an opportunistic one.

I've chatted to Det Oosthuizen in Hout Bay but unfortunately my gear isn't there.

Last week was a busy one for CT police, they also found a stash of gear at a sushi store in the CBD. This store reportedly has an entire room of gear all packaged with manuals and papers (in Chinese). The camera menus are all in Chinese too and it appeared that they were importing and reselling grey items...
Until someone went to buy one and it was theirs, with their serial number.
Police confiscated those items but there's still a ton of gear they can't prove is stolen unless they get those serial numbers.

Unfortunately my gear also wasn't there..

My point is Brad, I can understand how upset you are and I share your sentiments about the reseller. I believe that he should be diligent in checking the gear is legit and should be able to pick up stolen gear quite easily...
But that's not up to us to decide.
Let's take a step back and keep our emotions for the actual criminals, and help the SAPS where we can to get convictions.
There simply is no point to the other 5 pages of this forum of 'I said, You said'..

In the meanwhile please all keep an eye out for a large Lowepro bag with my business cards in, or memory cards with my exit data on them, or a bunch of pro Nikon gear.

Hey don't judge. You have car jackings in JHB.

Just out of interest, how many of you make it known when you're about to travel from point A to B? I am sure there are people who follow some photographers itineraries, especially when its openly advertised online in order to 'be around' just in case the opportunity arises to take a bag unnoticed and make a duck for it.

I never post the exact dates/times of my arrival when going somewhere for work. Mostly only once I've been there for a few hours or have already left. I keep venues a secret until we're done too.

Just a thought.

And yip, not lekker Matt, hope you recover your gear!

True I wouldn't be surprised actually, these guys were super organized. Shooting with a crew of 5 and no-one saw them grab a bag from at my feet while I was shooting.

There seem to be a lot of opportunists in CT CBD though, for the next few days shooting I was very aware of everyone and keeping a lookout for anyone suspicious and there were just so many.

I'm sure they hang around there and prey on tourists.

Sure Jhb still has the criminal element but I think everyone's just so overly careful that they don't take the chance as much there anymore.

Ok, now this is chillingly identical to what happened to us in Long street in June.

Yvette, Derek pointed out during this whole saga that people on some forums stick a whole "shopping list" of equipment they own on their profile, and that a suspect "dealer" has access to this and lots of other data about them. Where they can be followed home from on Tuesday night etc. Of course he was shouted at and like me, it was basically insinuated he is mentally-challenged, but this is a valid point. We tend to trust people on forums, but we treat our neighbour with caution

I'm sure they hang around there and prey on tourists.

yip, one of the cameras in the seized stash is a Brand New D800, which hasn't come through Nikon SA, so it looks like we are going to track it down to a tourist visiting SA (As much I am trying to convince the cops that it looks exactly like the D800 in my dream, they won't hand it over to me..sigh..)
