When does the clock start for models; when she sits for make-up and hair, or when she starts modelling?

Just need to know.

No No hell No

Time starts when you walk into the studio.
That's like saying you only pay for the operation and not time spent preparing for it in hospital.

All time is billable, you cannot rent the studio whilst the MUA is busy doing the make up.

Ok so the model books a Half day shoot starting at 09.00 Make up is finished at say 11.00, so the tog must work from 11.00 to 3.00.
So what happens to the afternoon shoot the tog must just cancel.
Do not think so girls.

I want to pay women for modelling for me and I don't know when to pay them from. Normally it's an hourly rate so when do I pay from?

I think the model should be done with makeup and hair and such at the scheduled time the photographer needs to start shooting.

I agree with Robert here.
Billable time is any time spend performing the task contracted for (whether prep, actual job or post production).

Definitely the entire time spent on set (whether being styled, made-up, or just waiting for other people between shoots) as that is time that could have been spent elsewhere.

As a photographer I charge accordingly, and sometimes even for travel time as well (over a base amount).

Getting made up is part of the job, so it must be paid as such. So the model gets paid from the call time.

@ OP

every response above is wrong.

the clock starts when you and the model agree it starts.

Draw up a small contract and mail it to the model before the shoot date. This will avoid any confusion. Also state in the contract that the images are yours to do with what you want (if that is the intention).

As Matt said - depends on what you have agreed/contracted to do.

If you pre-agreed that the model is responsible for MU, then MU is not your problem or billable time.
But, if you offer MU as well as the shoot, then time spent in MU is billable by the model.

As with most issues like this, it boils down to managing the expectations of all parties. Despite what many say, I strongly feel this is best done through a pre-shoot meeting and contract.

The last few comments have cleared things up for me.

If I was paying a model R200 an hour for a shoot, and another model R500 for a nude shoot, then the make-up and hair would be charged differently. I would rather then negotiate a fair fee as well as start and end times, or even a different fee during preparation than actual shooting time.

It's been a great help, thanks everyone.

yeah, i like this answer more too, think its fair.

I have always worked on "when we start shooting" hence my rates are worked out on 2 hours min. Otherwise it is not quite worth my while, otherwise the hourly rate changes.
