Id like to hear from some local photographers, on some good locations for beach shoots. I know of a few good spots, but Ive shot them all, and Id like to try somewhere new out. Bear in mind the safety factor... its a little hectic here atm. I believe a photographer was mugged at Stainbank Rerserve recently, as well Botanical gardens.

Any recommendations would be fab ;)

[edit]Actually... any locations would be fab. Im willing to share a few good locations if you are too :) Think... rich decor, & out of the ordinary.

There is an awesome location in La Mercy where we shot when we were there in April.. You can just ask Nolan to explain to you how to get there.... It is a fishermans' beach, but not very crowded. And if you go there late afternoon, you catch the sun before it dissapears behind the trees, like this:

I'm not too sure about safety, but we didnt have any problems while we were there.

Brighton beach (cave rock) & Ansteys beach on the bluff, awesome sunrises and rock pools at low tide, also the tidal pool is a great location, relatively safe in the early morning and during the day, I have lived at Brighton beach since 1994 & never been intimidated on the beach whilst shooting. You may also try the bush in the wildlife society off Marine Drive between Brighton Beach & Treasure beach, I would say this area is reasonably safe as I live 100m from the perimeter, there are no vagrants resident there. Access via the entrance in Marine drive or our road Gray Park road, your vehicle would be safe also in Gray Park (no recorded vehicle theft via reports from our CSO in the past) You are welcome to park in my yard if desired. Not 100% on Nolan's retouching tech here. I would maybe mail him and ask, he's such a rockstar Im sure he would point you in the right direction :)

There are a number of techniques you could use I guess... some better than others. Personally Id shoot it wide open, at like f2.0 - f1.2, and try get the basis for the look in ACR... push the fill light, and pull the contrast. Lower the vibrancy and saturation. Find the skin tone's and lower their saturation and push their brightness in the HSL tab. OR you could open as normal, and use curves adjustment layers to selectively brighten and tone the colors.

I've just done a shoot down the South Coast at Warner Beach which is great and open...long open stretches as opposed to the usual rock shoot. Great depth both along the beach and towards the water.

Thanks guys :)

There's a fab fashion location close to where I stay, if anyone is keen. Its an old colonial hotel which has been sold off in sections. The corner premises is being rented by a real estate company, and they are okay with people using it for shoots, provided they ask. It has an awesome old world feel to it. Hardwood staircase, stained glass windows etc etc...
Corner of Musgrave and St Thomas Road.
