About Derek Antonio Serra

I've been a Fashion/Art photographer for over 20 years on and off. In between I've been shooting broadcast documentaries, music video's, etc. I've shot for various fashion magazines and international publications, and mounted solo exhibitions, the last being "nudecapetown" in 2007.

Since 1999 I have also been very involved in the TV commercial/Feature film industry through my casting agency CENTRAL CASTINGS - we represent around 3 000 characters/models. I am the Vice-chair of OSCA - the South African Casting Association. Feel free to contact me with questions on the casting industry in general.

I am a partner in 100 Square, a professional studio in Cape Town which I share with 3 other photographers, so I can shoot anytime, regardless of the weather, although I love shooting on location.

I'm shooting in a studio for a change during winter, testing ideas and concepts and experimenting a bit.

MODEL SHOOTS
I'm always keen to photograph new models, so if you want to improve your portfolio with hot body shots (my speciality) or beauty shots get in touch...

Much of my work is shot on location - I've always been good at shooting in natural light in the streets of a city. My experience is that models can really be themselves in a natural environment.
I only shoot in studio when the job requires it.

I'll shoot on TFCD basis if I get to decide on what to shoot, or I approach the model with a concept. If MB models want specific shots for their portfolio then I charge a half-price rate of only
R 950/shoot + make-up.

NOTE: I do not generally allow mothers, aunts, boyfriends or husbands to watch a shoot. They are welcome to accompany the model to the location - and then go off for an hour for a coffee. A third party present during a shoot alters the dynamic between photographer and model - the result is usually a mediocre or failed shoot. Professional models don't bring companions to shoots, it's considered strange behaviour :) Nervous models who doubt my intentions should please contact the other MB models I've worked with to ease their apprehension :)
